Renewing My Run: Finding Strength, Breath, and Joy

Recently, I restarted a daily routine that had once been a cornerstone of my life—running. When I lived in Philadelphia, running was more than exercise; it was a ritual. Each morning, I would lace up my shoes and run the iconic Benjamin Franklin Bridge, a three-mile round trip from Philadelphia to Camden, NJ. The bridge became my personal symbol of resilience, a metaphor for conquering the challenges in my life.

Running the Ben Franklin Bridge: Building Strength and Character

Running the bridge's incline required every muscle to work hard. As I climbed, I focused on my breath, using it to calm my mind, relax my gait, and ease the tension in my body. Reaching the top of the bridge without stopping was a triumph that filled me with an incredible sense of accomplishment. The descent felt like a victory lap, and I heard my inner voice cheering, "Thank God, I did it."

This daily routine wasn't just physical but deeply emotional and transformative. The bridge strengthened my body, shaped my character, and taught me that persistence, like the run itself, was key to navigating life's challenges.

Even my boyfriend, now my husband, took note of my dedication. John, a multi-marathon runner, was the one who encouraged me to start running in the first place. Yet he often marveled, "You're crazy for running the bridge every day!" Though I never shared his marathon-level passion, running became a way for me to process life. Like life itself, some runs were effortless, while others were uphill battles.

A New Approach to Running: Breath, Relaxation, and Nutrition

Today, my running experience feels different, and for good reason. My focus has shifted from speed and effort to mindfulness and breath. Controlled, relaxed breathing now guides my runs, helping me clear my mind and energize my muscles.

Diet has also become a key part of my running success. Fueling my body with raw vegetables, fruits, and hydrating foods has had a noticeable impact. A balanced diet provides my cells with the energy they need, boosts my immune system, oxygenates my blood, and prevents cramping by keeping me hydrated. This holistic approach has elevated my running, making it not just an activity but a source of joy and renewal.

Looking Ahead: The Road (and Miles) Ahead

The difference in how I feel when I run today is remarkable. This may be the beginning of a new chapter in my running journey. Back then, I joined the Ft. Lauderdale Road Runners Club, which was a wonderful way to connect with a supportive community and build mileage on my running shoes. Who knows? Maybe a half marathon is in my future again.

Running has always been more than an exercise for me; it's a way to connect with myself, conquer challenges, and embrace life one step at a time.
